  • Multiple warming centers (such as those in Dayton, Moraine, and Vandalia) are set to open today to offer shelter as residents face dangerously cold temperatures this weekend.  WHIO-TV
  • Paula Kalaman, a local advocate who helped pass the Move Over, Slow Down law and co-founded an annual blood drive saving over 4,000 units, died on Dec. 5 at age 82—visitation is Monday, Dec. 15 at Parkview Church and a Christian burial will be held Tuesday, Dec. 16 in Centerville.  Dayton 24/7 Now
  • The Rotary Club of Troy is partnering with Community Rides to offer free rides home this holiday season to keep residents safe; Sheriff Duchak said extra patrols and posters at local bars will help maintain Miami County’s record of zero alcohol-related deaths since 1999.   • Santa’s Wonderland Nights opens tonight at 5679 Webster Street, giving families 2.5 hours of interactive holiday fun that includes dinner, games and a meet-and-greet with Santa (limited to 100 guests per night). The event runs until Jan. 4.  Dayton937.com

  • Gracelyn Staley, a junior music education major, launched Wright State's Cornhole Club this fall and it now has over 20 active members. The club plans to host professional visits from the American Cornhole League and compete in tournaments next spring — focusing on fun and competition.  Wright State University

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Dayton announced $2.6 million from Issue 6’s tax funds to repair about 80 owner-occupied and small multi-family properties through its Home Repair Revolving Loan Program. Forgivable loans will be limited to Welcome Home Ohio neighborhoods (Madden Hills, Fairview, Dayton View Triangle, Wolf Creek) in 2026 before expanding citywide.  WYSO
  • Governor DeWine signed an executive order on Wednesday to allocate up to $13,410,000 each fiscal year in 2026 and 2027 for TANF funds assisting nonprofits in supporting families, children & workforce training.   • Local eye doctor Eckhart launched Modern Eye's in-house membership plans in August to offer lower copays and discounts on exams, frames and contacts for individuals and small businesses, aiming to counter rising costs and corporate dominance while keeping money in the Dayton economy.
