- ➤ Shearer’s Foods is opening a new plant at the old GM paint shop on Springboro Pike in Moraine to make small bags of chips using new machines and strict quality checks — the company spent a year renovating the building and hired 250 workers. It will start making tortilla chips Dec 1 and add corn and potato chips early next year. Dayton Daily News
- ➤ Winsupply will expand its distribution center network later this month in Dayton, and Dayton Christian will launch a new hands on health care program for students in the area+ both projects aim to boost local business operations and offer fresh educational opportunities. Dayton 24/7 Now

- ➤ Dayton open mic nights let local comedians try new jokes and work on their act in small venues like Next Door Bar and Oregon Express—shows are held on different days of the week. The events give local talent a chance to grow after many gatherings were cut during Covid. Dayton Daily News
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Kettering City Schools announced Tuesday that it will combine all middle school students at Kettering Middle School next year because renovating Van Buren Middle School would cost about $32.6 million—saving about $4.9 million over five years, the district said. Van Buren Middle School will be demolished and the land is planned for new sports fields. Dayton Daily News
- ➤ University of Dayton will launch a two-week safety campaign from Nov. 9 to Nov. 21 that shows Flyers how to use the Flyer Safe app, blue light emergency phones, and Public Safety escorts—campus teams will set up Safety Spotlight tables to share guides, answer questions, and offer snacks. Students will also join a pizza event at Miriam Hall from 2 to 3:30 p.m. on Nov. 21 to learn more about these safety tools. Flyer News

- ➤ La Nina is a climate pattern that will bring more moisture to Miami Valley this winter + raise the chance of rain, snow and ice storms. Meteorologists say the first measurable snowfall is expected around November 23 + and conditions will be milder but wetter than past winters. Dayton 24/7 Now
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Local organizations are helping families stay warm by accepting applications for the Winter Crisis Program as the government shutdown leaves many struggling with heating bills. The state reallocated funds to cover program costs — letting families pay $175 for heat instead of a higher utility bill. Dayton 24/7 Now
- ➤ Travelers learned Thursday that some of the nation’s busiest airports may have fewer flights if the shutdown continues. Unnamed sources said Dayton International Airport is not on the list while Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky Airport is, and the FAA warned staffing shortages could lead to many cancellations. - ➤ Ohio will ask the state Controlling Board on Monday to release $2.5 million to buy the old Hara Arena site for a new mental health hospital that will add 208 beds as part of a plan to ease the state's bed shortage—while Trotwood officials oppose the location citing concerns over access and safety. - ➤ Over the next few weeks, the Brook Center will host events to help students appreciate what their bodies can do rather than how they look—featuring pop-up gratitude murals at campus hubs and a campus talk with an award-winning professor on body image.
