  • The Neighborhood Nest, a gluten-free bakery near Wright-Patterson Air Force Base in Fairborn, is offering store credit and access to a donated pantry to furloughed and struggling federal workers during the ongoing government shutdown. Owner Amber Tipton said individuals may receive $40 and families $60—support that helps people shop with dignity while catering to various dietary needs.  Spectrum News 1

  • Joby Aviation started producing propeller blades for its electric air taxis at a Dayton facility near the local airport—its plan is to make 15,000 blades a year with FAA-approved blades expected by November and test aircraft set to fly next year.  Dayton 24/7 Now
  • Larry Flynt, the founder of Hustler magazine, began his adult entertainment empire in Dayton by buying Larry’s Hillbilly Haven on Milburn Avenue in 1962 after leaving the Navy and working at General Motors—he later attracted local attention with a penny stunt to pay off a car loan.  Dayton Daily News

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Wright-Patterson civilian workers received a second furlough notice sent Friday that went into effect on or after Oct. 1 amid a long government shutdown. The notice said furloughs will last no more than 30 days—workers must return when a continuing resolution or appropriation is approved.  Dayton Daily News
  • Governor DeWine, Senate President McColley and House Speaker Huffman announced an executive order to allocate $25 million for Ohio food banks and emergency aid to over 63,000 low-income Ohioans who may lose SNAP benefits. The Ohio Department of Job and Family Services will move $7 million to food banks today and nearly double the benefits for Ohio Works First recipients by November 7—pending action from federal lawmakers.  Spectrum News 1

  • The University of Dayton women's soccer team earned a 3–1 win over the La Salle Explorers at Baujan Field last Friday — moving into the Atlantic 10 semifinals. Head coach Eric Golz celebrated his 100th win as the Flyers will play on Wednesday at 7 p.m.  Flyer News
