COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Guided by Mushrooms, a local farm in Dayton, received a $2,500 microgrant from Hall Hunger Initiative and used it from July 1 to August 5 to supply 35 pounds of mushrooms per week to House of Bread—providing 10,000 free lunches during that period. The farm, which produces up to 900 pounds weekly, is now looking for new markets after the LFPA program ended.  WYSO
  • On Friday, October 24, the Humane Society of Greater Dayton brought an adoptable pet to the "Your Day" studio to help it find a forever home—showing the organization’s commitment to pet adoption in our community.  Dayton 24/7 Now
  • On Thursday night, the Boys & Girls Club of Dayton raised over $400,500 for its $18 million campaign to build a new facility on the west side that will offer a gym, art and dance spaces, and a room for workforce training — construction is expected to begin within the next 12 months as the club, which currently serves about 200 youth, plans to double its reach.  Dayton Daily News

  • Shearer's Food will test equipment next month at its new factory at 4100 Springboro Pike and switch on production in November. The company will start its tortilla line on Dec 1 and add over 250 jobs at first—planning to expand further in fall and begin making corn and potato chips early next year.  Dayton Daily News
  • The drive-thru coffee stand with over 20,000 drink combinations opened several locations in the Miami Valley and is planning another soon—its expansion will offer more choices to local customers. The chain said the new location will help meet growing demand.  WHIO-TV

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Amid the federal shutdown, the U.S. EPA is cutting back on activities such as cleanup at Superfund sites and civil inspections to deal with reduced funding—these cuts may slow enforcement of environmental regulations while criminal investigations continue. In Ohio, the agency’s federal counterpart is reducing its operations as a contingency, though the Ohio EPA said it still meets its permit reviews and grant funding commitments.  WYSO

  • The Riverside-based Wright Brothers Institute has suspended operations as its board evaluates future plans while reassessing its mission for early 2026—leaving a two-decade legacy of supporting Air Force research and sparking local innovation.   • Federal employees in Dayton missed their full paycheck for the first time yesterday as the 23-day government shutdown left over 1.8 million without pay.
