  • Dayton is hosting several Halloween events this weekend—Boo & Brew is happening today in the Water Street District, Hauntfest with a costume contest and live entertainment is set for Saturday in the Oregon District, and a Boo-zy Block Party with a brunch buffet plus a trick-or-treat event with pumpkin decorating is planned for Sunday at Fire Blocks District and 2nd Street Market.   • Local families and business owners in Dayton are feeling financial pressure as the federal government shutdown—which has lasted three weeks—leads to cancelled appointments, lost pay, and worries over upcoming bills and holiday expenses.   • Beavercreek voters will choose five candidates running for three school board seats as funding, overcrowding, and facility planning remain key issues.   • The Miamisburg school board ballot shows six candidates for three seats, though only five remain in the race. GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • A Public Utilities Commission financial analyst testified that AES Ohio customers are set to receive an $11,060,705 refund due to excessive earnings in 2019, although the Office of the Ohio Consumers’ Counsel argued for a $61 million refund. An evidentiary hearing is scheduled for Oct. 28 to review the evidence before any refund amounts are finalized.  Dayton Daily News

  • At a Premier Global HIV Conference held today in Dayton, experts presented new data on medicines that both treat HIV and help prevent it. Dr. Jean Van Wyk from Viiv said these advances could lower the number of new cases—offering fresh hope in the fight against the virus.  Dayton 24/7 Now
  • Premier Health nurse practitioner Heather Branam said a nationwide recall of up to 16 cinnamon brands might affect holiday meals—Dayton residents should check their spices for safety. She warned that using recalled cinnamon could hurt health during the season.  Dayton 24/7 Now
  • Olentangy High School senior Addison Frazier is raising $8,000 for breast cancer research after losing her mother to the disease when she was 6. She drives to Dayton weekly to intern at Pink Ribbon Good and plans to create a support network called 'Linked by Hope' for children facing similar challenges — she hopes her efforts will bring needed change.  Spectrum News 1
