Here's your local news at a glance for Sunday, the 12th of October.
Good morning, Dayton.
Gov. Mike DeWine confirmed that the former Hara Arena property is the preferred site for a state-run mental health facility—a $300 million project planned on a 130-acre lot that will include a 270,000-square-foot hospital modeled after one in Columbus and is expected to create 500 jobs. Trotwood officials oppose the plan and city manager Quincy Pope said public input did not support building a behavioral health facility at that location, adding the city may use zoning laws to challenge the project.
Day Air Ball Park hosted the area's largest breast cancer awareness walk on Saturday morning as about 8,000 survivors, families, and friends dressed in pink urged regular screenings for early detection—resources were provided by the American Cancer Society, The James Comprehensive Cancer Center, and Premier Health's mobile mammogram trailer.
The Jefferson Regional Water Authority issued a boil advisory for Montgomery County customers in cities such as Trotwood, Miamisburg, Moraine, and others until further notice.
Residents should boil water to use it safely.
Dayton Children’s Hospital has been named a 2025-2026 Best Children’s Hospital in three areas—Neonatology, Orthopedics, and Pediatric Mental Health Services—based on data from 118 hospitals and surveys of pediatric experts.
Hospital president Deborah Feldman said the recognition confirms families receive expert care in their community.
Jim Paxson — a former University of Dayton star and NBA All-Star — joined the athletic department as Senior Advisor for Basketball Operations to help choose players and build the team.
He brings a long NBA career and years of executive work that add expert guidance to the men’s basketball program.
On Saturday, the Dayton Flyers defeated Valparaiso 41-10 as Bryce Schondelmyer threw three first-half touchdowns and the defense forced four turnovers (record 5-1 overall, 3-0 in PFL).
The team will host Butler on October 18 at noon at Welcome Stadium (game will air on WHIO Radio).
