  • During Fire Prevention Week, Dayton residents are urged to use lithium-ion batteries safely—Kelly Ransdell of the National Fire Protection Association explains proper buying, charging and disposal methods to reduce fire risks.  Dayton 24/7 Now
  • The Rotary Clubs of Dayton and Kettering with help from the Miami Conservancy District organized a cleanup of the Great Miami Riverway on October 4. Thirty volunteers took part in the event—an effort that is part of a larger initiative to protect local waterways across the Ohio River watershed.  WHIO-TV

BUSINESS NEWS

  • The University of Dayton Flyer Pitch competition is now accepting applications from local entrepreneurs with a deadline of October 19. This year the event uses a new two-round format—starting with 60-second elevator pitches in the fall and followed by a funding round in the spring—with over $100,000 available in prizes.  WHIO-TV
  • On Monday, October 6th, Dayton Metro Library provided expert guidance to local businesses during an interview with Business Services Specialist Camille Buford—she explained how the library supports firms with tailored assistance.   • The Dayton city commission approved a five-year, $1.4 million contract with a new concession company that will add restaurants to Dayton International Airport. Tailwind Hospitality Inc. will start its agreement early next year with venues like Warped Wing Brewery, Dunkin’ at DAY, Gem City Provisions, The 1903, and Buckeye Pie Pizza—upgrading terminal areas with $2 million in improvements.  Dayton Daily News

  • Miami Township is preparing for winter as its snowplow drivers take part in training with classroom sessions + practical driving exercises on local roads. The training will continue through the week and drivers will soon switch to leaf removal duties ahead of the first snowfall later in the fall.  WHIO-TV
  • City officials announced that a local road in Moraine will close today for about four weeks as Brumbaugh Construction replaces a defective 60-inch culvert crossing Pinnacle Road near Deer Meadow Park—motorists can detour via Soldiers Home-West Carrollton Road, Caylor Road, and South Gettysburg Avenue. The park remains open and accessible from Main Street during construction.  Dayton Daily News
  • AES Ohio has proposed two new SEET analyses for the Public Utilities Commission—each could lead to a $1.6 million refund for Dayton customers after a Supreme Court ruling pushed the company to return $61 million in excess earnings. Consumer advocates caution that while the utility pointed to its fragile financial condition and large asset write-offs to justify the lower refund, the payout remains uncertain.  Dayton Daily News

  • Chefs are teaming up for three wine dinners in the Dayton region this month. Oak & Ember Farms hosts a seven-course dinner on Oct. 11 at 6 p.m., J. Alexander’s teams with Orin Swift Cellars for a wine dinner on Oct. 22 at 6:30 p.m. — tickets cost $268.61 and $150 respectively — while Meadowlark Restaurant holds a benefit dinner on Oct. 26 at 4 p.m. with a $20 deposit.  Dayton Daily News
