  • During Halloween weekend, Hershall Creachbaum’s family and community members redecorated the McClure Street bridge with messages, stuffed animals and flowers to honor the 7-year-old whose remains were found near U.S. 35 after his disappearance was reported in July—organizers said they will continue to honor him on future holidays.  Dayton 24/7 Now
  • The Vandalia Fire Division hosted its annual open house on Sunday where citizens rode in fire trucks and watched live demonstrations of rescue operations—community members learned how firefighters work.  WHIO-TV

CULTURE NEWS

  • Alpha Phi won first place in the first POTH dance competition—held at UD Arena on September 26th as part of Greek Week—by performing a routine inspired by One Direction. All eight sisterhood chapters and a two-team contest featuring Phi Kappa Tau competed while 2417 people watched and over $47,000 was raised for the Collin Wiant Foundation.  Flyer News

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Wright State University has partnered with Coursera Career Academy to give students, staff and faculty free access to courses that offer certificates from companies like Google, Meta and IBM — the program starts today and may be added to regular classes soon.  Wright State University

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Dayton city commissioners approved a draft zoning update requiring a 1,000-foot gap between group homes and capping occupancy limits at 12 foster care group homes per area—existing homes may continue under the current moratorium. The proposal builds on a summer Plan Board decision and awaits further votes before changing current regulations.  Dayton Daily News
  • Clearcreek Township voters will decide on a 2.25-mill levy—expected to raise $3M a year—to help the police department add three officers over the next three years. Chief John Terrill said the funds will address a growing population and high call volumes as the township expands.  Dayton Daily News
  • Montgomery County’s first police dog license was given to K9 Ghost, a 13-month-old German Shepherd who joined Union Police Department in September and was bought with donations from local VFW posts (VFW 8211 and Brown & Small VFW 5434). K9 Ghost will begin K-9 unit training at Northmont Animal Clinic and his license helps meet state law for dogs over three months old.  WHIO-TV

  • Quinnley Loges, a 3-year-old girl from Carlisle, is recovering in hospital after years of waiting for a heart transplant — her family learned at a 20-week scan that she did not have both sides of her heart, which led to early surgeries and ongoing care at Nationwide Children’s Hospital.  WHIO-TV
