COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Giovanni's in Fairborn hosted a fundraiser to support chef Franco Gallo after he suffered severe complications from a routine heart procedure; locals and business owners rallied by donating funds and placing carry-out orders—helping his family focus on his treatment.  Dayton 24/7 Now
  • A drive-thru mass food distribution event will be held at UD Arena on Thursday from 10 a.m. to noon — hosted by The Foodbank Inc. and including free produce, pet food, and dental hygiene items for those in need. Attendees should enter at Entrance B on Edwin C. Moses Boulevard and prepare for wet conditions if it rains.  Dayton Daily News
  • Trotwood Community Improvement Corporation held an open house Tuesday at the former Sears site to gather ideas for turning the old Salem Mall into a mixed-use facility featuring a food hall—market and space for small business. Demolition will begin in the next 45 to 60 days and construction will start late this year to early next year, with another open house scheduled for today at 5:00 p.m.  Dayton 24/7 Now

BUSINESS NEWS

  • The Better Business Bureau in Dayton said that its president and CEO, John North, passed away on Saturday, September 20—Christy Mauch has been named to lead the bureau while plans to honor his legacy are underway.  Dayton937.com

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Ohio University will honor former President Roderick J. McDavis and his wife Deborah McDavis on Friday by celebrating his legacy and dedicating a new dormitory named the Roderick J. McDavis Residence Hall, which will open next fall with 591 beds. During his term from 2004 to 2017 the university started its first guaranteed tuition plan and raised over half a billion dollars to support students and programs.  Dayton Daily News
  • Fairmont High School’s Career Technology Center in Kettering received a $2.1 million grant from the Ohio Department of Education and Workforce to update its engineering space—about a dozen juniors now train with CNC, robotics, welding, and hand tools to build skills for advanced manufacturing jobs. The upgraded program also lets many juniors and seniors earn college credits and scholarships that help bridge school and work.  WYSO

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Montgomery County Board of County Commissioners released its report covering progress on infrastructure, economic stability, youth services, and community well-being from 2020 to 2024 yesterday. Commissioners said the Results-Based Accountability framework guided measurable outcomes that will shape future actions.  Montgomery County
  • Dayton International Airport began repairs on its parking garage to improve traffic flow, lighting, and safety. The work will close parts of the second and third floors temporarily — drivers should arrive early and follow signs for available parking.  WHIO-TV

HEALTH NEWS

  • Dr. Aimie Apigian, author of The Biology of Trauma, joined Your Day on Tuesday morning in Dayton to explain how a lack of sleep might cause exhaustion and brain fog—she noted that these issues go beyond simple stress or burnout.  Dayton 24/7 Now

REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • Dayton’s Madden Hills, Fairview, and Dayton Triangle neighborhoods will soon welcome up to 40 families of first-time homebuyers who will own new, energy-efficient homes built by Centerstone Homes and Ohio Regional Constructors—working with the Montgomery County Land Bank’s WelcomeHome Ohio Program. Additional renovations are planned on 20 single-family homes in 17 neighborhoods, with each home receiving new appliances and a 15-year property tax exemption.  Dayton 24/7 Now

  • Helke Park will host Paddle-Palooza, a 36-hour pickleball event running from noon Friday to midnight Saturday — with clinics, food trucks, and overnight camping available for participants 13 and older.   • The 29th annual Air Force Marathon took place this past weekend at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base – the grounds of the National Museum of the U.S. Air Force and Wright State University also hosted races that drew more than 7,600 competitors from 50 states and 11 countries, with Zach Kraft winning the men's full race and Kayla Brown taking the top women's spot.  WYSO
