COMMUNITY NEWS

  • On Sunday, 167 veterans departed from Wright-Patt on military aircraft for Operation Honor to tour Washington, D.C. war memorials and returned around 8 p.m. for a base concert—volunteers processed the veterans from pre-dawn and served breakfast.  Dayton Daily News
  • Ron Budzik, a respected Dayton business leader and former Mead executive, died Sept 12 at 83. He helped turn an empty downtown building into a performing arts center and supported local organizations—his Memorial Mass is set for 11 a.m. Oct 16 at Holy Angels Catholic Church with a luncheon afterward.  Dayton Daily News

  • On Saturday, Dayton’s Hispanic community celebrated its Hispanic Heritage Festival amid national immigration concerns, with organizers saying the funds raised will support college scholarships and show the city's welcoming stance — even as fears of ICE enforcement lingered.  Dayton Daily News
  • Solange Asingabona opened SoSo Cuisine in a West Carrollton plaza on South Alex Road to serve Rwandan and East African dishes that unite immigrant and local Daytonians. Her son Angelo Ihirwe helps in the kitchen—adding a personal touch that honors rich food traditions and supports local culture.  Dayton Daily News

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Amanda Brewer, assistant director of the School of Fine and Performing Arts, received the 2025 President’s Award for Excellence in Human Relations today for her two decades of service supporting students and staff at Wright State, having begun her career as an office assistant in 2005 and rising to her current role in 2023 + she remains the first point of contact for many prospective students.  Wright State University
  • Kathy Warden, the manager for university space and special projects, was honored with the President’s Award for Excellence in Service for her work on major campus projects — including the Dayton Hoopla STEM Challenge and office moves. Daniel Palmer said she gives her best to help students, staff and faculty.  Wright State University
  • Wright State faculty Sean Banerjee and Natasha Banerjee were awarded a nearly $3 million NSF grant to lead a project that will use advanced technologies — like AI, virtual reality and collaborative robots — to modernize scrap metal recycling and keep manufacturing local. The project will also offer community courses and student research positions beginning in spring 2026.  Wright State University
  • Bethany DeLong, associate director for enrollment and retention at Wright State University's College of Health, Education and Human Services, received the 2025 President’s Award for Excellence in Leadership for boosting student recruitment and mentoring staff—she also improved digital processes and organized key campus events.  Wright State University

HEALTH NEWS

  • Kettering Health Wilmington is expanding its facility to 71,000 square feet and adding services like a breast center, full-service imaging, and a pharmacy—along with new operating rooms, infusion bays, and specialty exam rooms. The $70 million project will be done in late 2026 and shows the network's work to give quality care.  WHIO-TV
  • About 500 community members gathered at Day Air Ball Park on Sunday for the annual ALS Walk, raising about 80% of the $115,000 goal to support research and care. Families and supporters united to help those battling the degenerative disease—ALS.  Dayton 24/7 Now
  • Costco recalled over 3,000 pounds of its Kirkland Signature Ahi Tuna Wasabi Poke due to green onions testing positive for Listeria—a potentially life-threatening bacteria. SPORTS NEWS

  • Dayton Volleyball wrapped the Flyer Invitational at Frericks Center with a 2-1 finish as senior Liana Sarkissian passed 500 career kills during the Illinois State match. The Flyers ended out-of-conference play at a 5-6 record and will start in-conference play at Davidson this Friday then face Fordham on October 3rd.  Flyer News
