  • A local restaurant in Dayton's Oregon District faced a small kitchen fire over Labor Day weekend that paused its Sunday brunch and led to lost orders — community members helped by supporting a cookout that will cover equipment replacement and employee hours.   • Young's Dairy wrapped up its Labor Day Family Value Weekend with thousands enjoying batting cages, a corn maze, and homemade ice cream. BUSINESS NEWS

  • GE Aerospace said Monday it presented a record offer to its striking UAW union with plans for 82 new bargaining unit positions and wage increases conditioned on full ratification by Friday. The offer comes as union Local 647 remains unsatisfied even though GE employs over 1,400 Dayton-area workers and runs main plants in Beavercreek, Vandalia (and near the University of Dayton campus).  Dayton Daily News
  • Dayton manufacturer DRT signed an agreement with Atlanta recycler Novelis to produce can ends made from up to 99% recycled content—building on DRT’s long history of innovation in can end manufacturing. CRIME NEWS

  • Xavier Smith pleaded guilty in West Carrollton to aggravated robbery for attacking a man with a hammer and stealing his vehicle; he was sentenced to four to six years in prison (with credit for 116 days served) and will face probation for two to five years upon release.  Dayton Daily News
  • A large police presence was reported near the University of Dayton campus on Sunday night due to a large gathering—police remained for several hours while Dayton 24/7 Now reached out to UD Police for more details.  Dayton 24/7 Now
  • Police arrested eight people during a large Labor Day weekend gathering in the University of Dayton student neighborhood, charging one for disorderly conduct and six outside the event—while a 19-year-old was arrested for firing a gun near Brown and Stewart Streets.  Dayton 24/7 Now

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Dayton Public Schools faces challenges in its busing plan for next school year even after recent court wins, as district officials say they need 50 new buses at about $150,000 each because a downtown bus hub limits routes for high school students. The district noted that new buses take 18 to 24 months to obtain — lawmakers have urged improvements to the hub to keep local business from leaving — and the case is set for trial next September.  WHIO-TV

  • Seven state lawmakers from Miami Valley say they plan to tackle many issues when they return to Columbus. They will propose bills on hemp product safety, public marijuana smoking bans, refundable health care credits, criminal justice changes like banning job history questions, tougher penalties for crimes against responders, fentanyl trafficking, Medicaid biomarker tests, laws addressing artificial intelligence in schools, and faster college degrees—each aimed at meeting regional needs.  Dayton Daily News
