ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • A person was rescued from Ludlow Falls in Miami County Saturday evening and hospitalized while fire department crews warn that swimming there is illegal and dangerous—residents are urged to avoid the falls.  WHIO-TV

CRIME NEWS

  • Police arrested a young man on Thursday morning at Belmont High School on the 2600 block of Wayne Avenue after one student allegedly pointed a gun at another; he was booked on charges including aggravated menacing, carrying a concealed weapon and illegal conveyance of a deadly weapon in a safety zone.  Dayton 24/7 Now
  • Sha'King Jones, 27, was convicted of murder, two counts of felonious assault, and a weapons violation for fatally shooting security guard Darnell Pate Jr. outside Napoleon’s Palace off Germantown Pike in Jefferson Twp.—His sentencing is set for September.  WHIO-TV
  • Englewood and Clayton police investigated several daytime burglaries in Montgomery County where suspects knocked on front doors and broke in when no one answered—stealing valuables from homes between July 28 and Aug. 15.  WHIO-TV

CULTURE NEWS

  • A fundraising event in Troy raised support for restoring Overfield Tavern and honored about 20 black Civil War servicemen with a ceremony at Riverside Cemetery. Archeology will start this October and a new roof is planned for December—both enabled by local grants.  Dayton 24/7 Now

EDUCATION NEWS

  • DECA, a charter school in East Dayton, will buy RTA bus passes for its high school students after DPS stopped buying passes for charter schools—an option allowed by a state law exemption. The school will spend about $1.3 million, with the state covering 40% of the cost.  Dayton Daily News

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Ohio Governor Mike DeWine has appointed Brandon S. Myers to Montgomery County Municipal Court—replacing James Piergies, who resigned after pleading guilty. Myers will take office on September 2 and plans to run for election in November.  WHIO-TV
