- ➤ About 360 military and veteran kids got free backpacks filled with school supplies at a resource fair held Saturday at the Richard C. Holbrooke Conference Center — where Blue Star Families with Operation Homefront and the Air Force’s School Liaison Program teamed up — to help ease back-to-school costs amid frequent moves. - ➤ On Aug 7, more than 1,400 households received food assistance at Wright State’s Nutter Center during a mass distribution organized by The Foodbank — volunteers from CareSource, SICSA Pet Adoption and Wellness Center and Wright State’s basketball teams helped distribute fresh produce, proteins, grains and pet food in a drive-through format. - ➤ A grand jury declined to indict the officers after they fatally shot 26-year-old Taylor Cotton during a mental health call in Dayton last year — Cotton reportedly pointed an unloaded shotgun at the responding officers before being shot multiple times. Dayton Daily News

- ➤ Wright State and Premier Health hosted a Nursing and Health Careers Camp from June 24–26 where 46 local high school juniors and seniors practiced CPR, AED use, and bleeding control in simulated hospital settings—students explored a range of health care careers during hands-on training. Wright State University
- ➤ Joe Stefko IV, his father, and his sister Jordan upheld a three-generation legacy by graduating from Wright State’s Boonshoft School of Medicine, demonstrating a strong commitment to compassionate care & medical excellence. Joe IV will begin his radiology residency in Pittsburgh while Jordan, after completing her fellowship, plans to return to Ohio to continue her work in critical care. Wright State University

- ➤ On Aug. 31, Dayton RTA will launch a new express route X6 to give riders quick access to the National Museum of the United States Air Force—stopping downtown, at hotels, and near Wright State University. The route will run seven days a week from 8:45 a.m. to 5:15 p.m. with less than a 40-minute trip, and changes to Routes 1, 3, and 6 will also take effect then. Dayton 24/7 Now
- ➤ Englewood Police Department launched a monthly podcast—each episode lasting 10 to 15 minutes—to share insights into police work including crime prevention and community events; the latest installment features Officer Kyle Gee explaining his Montgomery County S.W.A.T. duties and School Resource Officer Doug Hacker offering school safety tips. - ➤ Montgomery County is hosting Overdose Awareness Day on Tuesday from 5 to 8 p.m. at Levitt Pavilion in downtown Dayton—where free naloxone will be provided and a new Faces of Harm Reduction campaign will launch—to help reduce the stigma of drug overdose while also offering a free hot meal and dessert from Armada Recovery.
