- ➤ Dayton police conducted welfare checks at 7-year-old Hershall Creachbaum’s home on April 3 and April 4 before a July 12 911 call led to a search that found his remains, and documents reveal that officers noted signs of concern for his care—with child services and state agencies still reviewing the case. - ➤ Damarez Jones, aged 27, was indicted on murder, felonious assault, tampering with evidence and weapon charges after he shot his uncle, aged 42, near N Main Street and Ernst Avenue at about 11:25 p.m. on July 8 and is held in Montgomery County Jail on a $1 million bond—he is set to be arraigned on July 29. - ➤ Big Brothers Big Sisters Miami Valley will hold a back-to-school backpack giveaway on July 31 to help program kids get ready for school—donations for supplies are accepted at its S. Jefferson Street location. WDTN
- ➤ Nearly 400 K-8 students — from United Way’s Freedom Schools Collaborative — attended the event at Greater Dayton Recreation Center on Wednesday where local leaders including Mayor Jeffrey Mims Jr. stressed that education is a social right. Gabby Morgan — Montgomery County director of United Way — said one in five local residents reads below a fifth grade level and added that the program will help students gain essential reading skills. - ➤ A petition to add a 1-mill tax for a new hospital in West Dayton was tied at Dayton’s city commission meeting on Wednesday, so the Clergy Community Coalition must collect 1,250 more signatures in the next 20 days to put the levy on the November ballot.
