COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The St. Vincent de Paul Gateway Shelter for Women and Families on Apple Street in Dayton closed its doors to new single women until August because demand has exceeded its capacity & current guests and families will continue to stay at the shelter.  WDTN
  • Khris Goins started Black Trans Men of Ohio after he saw few people like himself and now the group helps Black trans men and nonbinary individuals get support, jobs, and proper health care. The nonprofit works with local groups to fight discrimination and bring needed resources to the community — it is growing to meet ongoing needs.  WYSO
  • The Dayton food bank served over 700 families at a food drive at the Montgomery County Fairgrounds on Thursday from 10 a.m. to noon, where over 1,000 people collected groceries such as chicken drumsticks + fresh produce to help ease rising costs.  WHIO-TV

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Wat Da Pho Express, a restaurant offering Vietnamese cuisine, will open this fall at 1047 Brown St. in the former Pita Pit space near the University of Dayton. Owners Steven Huynh and An Le plan to serve signature items like pho, banh mi and bubble tea — aiming to attract students and longtime residents — while they await final building permit approval from the city.  Dayton Daily News
  • Several new businesses are set to open on Wayne Avenue in Dayton this year, including five food places and one art studio with plans for pickup, dine-in, bakery services and art classes. Agnes has already opened its pickup location at 263 Wayne Ave and will add a dine-in section later this month, while Food Castle will open in the former Tank’s Bar & Grill this month, the owners of Meadowlark Restaurant and Wheat Penny Oven and Bar plan a new brunch restaurant this fall, Good Hands Bread Co. aims to launch a bakery by summer's end, Bootleg Bagels is preparing a new spot for fall and MADE Studio and Shop will move into a larger space later in the fall.  Dayton Daily News

CRIME NEWS

  • Investigators in Dayton are looking into whether the proper county Children Services agency handled welfare reports for 7-year-old Hershall Creachbaum before his death on July 12, when his body was found near his mother’s home on Xenia Avenue — Montgomery County Children Services and the Ohio Department of Children and Youth are gathering more details to address public concerns.  WHIO-TV
  • Dayton police said one person was injured in a shooting just before 9:30 p.m. Thursday night in the 500-block of W.-Fairview Avenue as a male was shot in a car and officers are investigating the incident.  WDTN

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Montgomery County Jail Coalition delivered a petition with 2,101 signatures on Tuesday to Sheriff Rob Streck and county commissioners to demand a permanent independent oversight committee for the jail following recent inmate deaths, including 19-year-old Isaiah Trammell. The coalition, backed by victims' families, said it will continue pressing for accountability and requested a response by Aug.1 — the effort shows growing community concern.  WYSO
