ACCIDENTS NEWS
- ➤ On July 8, 1986, a CSX freight train derailed in Miamisburg and released a 1,000-foot cloud of burning phosphorus that forced over 17,500 people to evacuate and led to hospital treatments and emergency shelters. A second rupture forced an even larger evacuation and crews battled fires and chemical hazards—an event later marked by multiple lawsuits and known as one of the largest evacuations from a train accident in U.S. history—leaving a lasting impact on the community. - ➤ Neighbors are worried after a security camera captured a SUV stopping on Pinecrest Drive and firing at least 10 shots at a Dayton home just before 4:20 a.m. on Monday. WHIO-TV
- ➤ Dayton police asked the public for information after a Fourth of July block party shooting on Catalpa Drive and West Grand Avenue—four people sustained gunshot injuries and were taken to local hospitals, with the incident reported at 11:55 p.m. near the 1600 block while the party was held on the 1700 block. - ➤ The Clergy Community Coalition submitted a petition with over 2,300 voter signatures to build a public hospital in West Dayton — the Dayton City Commission will hold a public hearing today at 8:30 a.m. If approved, a tax will help fund the hospital — if denied, the coalition will gather 250 more signatures to push the issue to a ballot vote. - ➤ The Air Force Life Cycle Management Center at Wright Patterson awarded two new contracts—one to the University of Dayton for weapon system work in Dayton set to finish by June 30, 2026 and another to General Dynamics for a $41.6 million software project in Beavercreek scheduled to complete by December 2030.
