  • Bootleg Bagels, a micro bakery from Yellow Springs, will open a brick-and-mortar spot on Wayne Avenue in Dayton this fall — the 2,300-square-foot space will offer bagels, baked goods, sandwiches and coffee. Owner Benjamin Bullock said the growing restaurant scene in the area led him to finalize plans for his first own space since starting the business during the pandemic.  Dayton Daily News

  • Local Wright State alum Nicole Scherzinger won her first Tony Award for best leading actress in the Broadway revival of Sunset Boulevard — a win that builds on her long career in music and theatre. She also received a British Olivier Award and was named one of Time's 100 most influential people — honors that highlight her broad impact on the stage.  Wright State University

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Higher electric bills will affect AES Ohio and Duke Energy customers this month as AES Ohio raises its residential rate by $0.0087 per kWh to $0.0945 and Duke Energy’s plan increases its rate nearly 2.5 cents per kWh to $0.1045 — a typical 1,000 kWh user will pay about $8.41 more by the end of Duke’s three-year plan.  Dayton Daily News

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • A new bill in Ohio will hold adults more accountable for underage drinking by changing a word in the law from 'knowingly' to 'recklessly' so that those who provide alcohol to minors can be prosecuted. The bill is now before the House Judiciary Committee and may lead to community education if it passes.  Dayton Daily News
  • At a Dayton City Commission meeting, advocates argued that clearing homeless encampments prevents outreach workers from keeping in touch with those in need while city officials say they must act on complaints about illegal camps. City Manager Shelley Dickstein said staff will review best practice proposals—such as longer notice before sweeps—to better serve both unhoused individuals and local residents.  Dayton Daily News

HEALTH NEWS

  • Dayton Children’s opened its new Mathile Center for Mental Health and Wellness to help more children get care for growing mental health needs. The facility will begin seeing patients on July 15 and add a second floor in January—its building cost was between $108 million and $110 million with funds from the state, philanthropy, hospital capital and HUD.  Spectrum News 1
