  • Madison Township firefighters rescued a baby deer from fast-moving floodwaters on May 28 at 11:42 a.m. after hearing it carried downstream while clearing the scene.  WHIO-TV

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Gas prices in Ohio dropped 23.9 cents from last week, with the average now at $4.506 per gallon, though prices remain higher than last year. Dayton drivers can pay as little as $3.892 at Sam's Club on Miller Ln + find similar rates across the region.  Dayton Daily News

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Xenia High School senior Abbey Arden overcame early expulsions and credit struggles to graduate this month; she plans to work & save for a car as she pursues a commercial driver’s license.  Dayton Daily News
  • Archbishop Alter High School announced that women's basketball coach and athletic director Chris Hart, who led the Lady Knights to five state championships, is retiring along with science teacher Randy Reeder and advancement director Robin Blank.   • Rodil Espinoza-Martinez, a first-generation American who struggled early on, transferred to Spring Valley Academy where he became class president and learned music and construction before planning to study construction management at University of Cincinnati; he encourages younger students to enjoy the opportunities available (despite early challenges).  Dayton Daily News
  • Brian White — a Centerville High School senior living with paramyotonia congenita muscular dystrophy — uses dance to ease symptoms and support his family as he graduates this month. He will enroll at Wright State University next year and join the dance team.  Dayton Daily News
  • After suffering a stroke from an AVM that sent her into a coma, Fairmont High School senior Brittany Percifull has graduated this spring and will attend Wright State University to study physical therapy, a field she embraced after her recovery.  Dayton Daily News
  • Dayton Public Schools will begin a free summer food program for youth 18 and younger on June 1, serving breakfast, lunch, and snacks at churches, parks, libraries, and schools—ending July 31.  WYSO

  • Dayton Mayor will hold a town hall on gun and youth violence later this week in a local venue, with Police Chief Eric Henderson and community panelists expected to address concerns.  WHIO-TV
