COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Scouting America Troop 193 in Kettering is raising funds to repair the storm-damaged masonry entrance at the Victory Oak Knoll memorial near Community Golf Course after a large oak limb fell last fall. The troop is also working to remove invasive honeysuckle and replace a fence—repair costs are estimated at about $6,000 for masonry and $1,000 for fencing.  Dayton Daily News

  • A 20-year-old pedestrian was hit by a vehicle just before midnight Friday at North James H. McGee Boulevard and Rosedale Drive in Dayton and was taken to Miami Valley Hospital with serious injuries.  Dayton Daily News

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Ohio teachers will finish science of reading training by the start of the next school year—this program helps students learn to sound out words instead of just recognizing them, and local districts are spending their own money along with state funds to update curriculums and boost reading scores.  Dayton Daily News

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Representatives from Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia and Serbia visited the Hope Hotel at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base on Sunday to honor the room where peace talks ended a war that lasted 43 months over three decades ago. About 50 delegates from the region, including officials from Albania, Kosovo, Montenegro and North Macedonia, gathered to remember the historic event and had planned a visit to the National Museum of the U.S. Air Force later with a Sarajevo symphony — though law enforcement blocked access to museum entrances.  Dayton Daily News
  • NATO Parliamentary Assembly delegates visited several Dayton spots Saturday night including the Dayton Arcade, Wright-Dunbar and the Oregon District. Mircea Geoana and Tino Cuellar praised local landmarks and friendly residents while one visitor said the heavy security around the NATO Village made the experience feel overly militarized.  Dayton Daily News
  • Dayton is hosting a NATO gathering where over 240 lawmakers from 32 member and partner nations work to draft policy recommendations ahead of the June summit in The Hague. Assembly President Marcos Perestrello said the session will address issues like military spending, fairer burden-sharing, and Ukraine support—guiding the Alliance’s future course.  Dayton Daily News
  • The NATO Parliamentary Assembly is meeting in Dayton for its spring session that will finish today and aims to develop policy recommendations for leaders ahead of a June summit in The Hague—planners report that local downtown activity has been adjusted for assembly safety.  Dayton Daily News
