  • David Lyons of Beavercreek has been honored as a Community Gem by Dayton Daily News for his weekly volunteer work at URS — a center serving individuals with developmental and acquired disabilities near Riverside and Huber Heights.  Dayton Daily News
  • Locals in Old North Dayton restored the North Dayton Patriots Memorial to honor World War II veterans and will dedicate the monument on June 14 at the corner of Keowee and Valley. The City of Dayton has agreed to maintain the site for preserving community history.  WYSO

  • Carillon Historical Park held Heritage Day on Sunday to honor veterans and celebrate the 250th anniversary of the United States. The event featured costumed interpreters, hands-on historical activities, and live concerts (Carillon Park Concert Band and Dayton Philharmonic Orchestra) that benefited Dayton History.  Dayton 24/7 Now

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The Ohio Senate Education Committee amended SB 127 to limit closures to charter schools by excluding public schools and setting criteria for community school shutdowns — Dayton Public Schools superintendent David Lawrence warned the change risks repeating past policy mistakes; the bill remains in committee a year after its proposal.  Dayton Daily News

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Heavy rain since Tuesday led officials to close four dams and floodgates in West Carrollton, Middletown, and Hamilton to reduce flood risk. Crews are monitoring levees and dams while advising residents to avoid flooded areas + the river.  Dayton 24/7 Now
  • The historic Germantown Covered Bridge was affected by heavy flooding on Saturday, May 23 — crews cleared debris along East Center Street in Germantown while the bridge suffered minor damage during restoration work.  Dayton Daily News
