COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Local students and softball players teamed up with Shoes 4 the Shoeless to give new shoes to children (at Vandalia-Butler City Schools) today. The local nonprofit organized the effort to provide essential footwear for kids.  WHIO-TV
  • Dayton social justice leader Bishop Richard E. Cox, founder of the Clergy Community Coalition, died on May 2. His coalition passed a tax levy for a new public hospital in West Dayton last November and remains focused on completing the project.  WYSO
  • A new resource center in Montgomery County now helps children in kinship and foster care stay connected to family and gives caregivers essential support at the start of placements (Montgomery County).  WHIO-TV
  • On Friday, May 8, 2026, hundreds of law enforcement officers, retirees and family members gathered at RiverScape MetroPark to honor the 49 fallen officers at the 19th annual Montgomery County Law Enforcement Memorial Ceremony. Attendees placed white carnations at floral tributes to remember each officer.  Dayton Daily News

EDUCATION NEWS

  • University of Dayton and Sinclair Community College celebrated 10 years of the UD-Sinclair Academy on Monday, May 4 at the Kennedy Union Ballroom. The program gives Sinclair students a smooth path to earn a UD degree with nearly 80% staying in the region after graduation.  Dayton Daily News
  • Disabled UD student with a prosthetic leg encountered issues with campus parking when she was ticketed for using a handicap spot during a time of need (she said the process required multiple appeals), and university officials noted that students can still appeal decisions.  Flyer News
  • Caterina + Gina McNamara earned master’s degrees from UD over Mother's Day weekend in Dayton. Both previously earned undergraduate degrees from UD + became the third and fourth family members to earn a master’s.  WHIO-TV
