- ➤ Joseph Desch, a Dayton native from Edgemont, led a top-secret project at NCR that built a code-breaking computer to defeat the German Navy’s Enigma machine—an invention that helped shorten World War II. - ➤ Dayton Photonics, a local tech firm started in 2023 by two University of Dayton grads, is testing its breakthrough wireless technology called Theia Fiberless Optics that uses light signals from fiber optics without cables on city rooftops. - ➤ On Friday, nearly 400 Brookville High School students spent a three-hour period volunteering by helping local residents with tasks like moving wood and cutting trees, including assisting Greg Eley who is waiting for a lung transplant. - ➤ Dayton doctor James Gentry Laws, who brought new heart treatments and took trips to help people in hard-hit areas, died April 30 at age 87—he spent many years advancing local heart care before retiring to Florida.
