CRIME NEWS
- ➤ Cure Violence Global said its assessment shows Dayton is ready for a violence interruption plan that targets Miami Chapel and North Riverdale, and the program will start mid-to-late summer with teams of up to 10 workers per area at a cost of about $565,000 per target area—this approach has reduced shootings by up to 75% in other cities. Mayor Jeffrey Mims said the plan is part of his peace campaign to teach conflict resolution and help keep the community safe. Dayton Daily News

- ➤ A dozen grade school students were awarded full rides to Wright State University after competing in the Big Hoopla STEM Challenge—eight earned their scholarships by winning a basketball contest while four were chosen by random draw—helping ease future college costs and spark early interest in STEM. - ➤ Sinclair Community College will honor nearly 8,000 graduates Friday at its commencement—this includes the first bachelor of science in nursing graduates and 89 College Credit Plus students earning 94 associate degrees among other groups ranging in age from 16 to 69. - ➤ On Friday, May 2, law enforcement officials from across the Miami Valley gathered downtown Dayton for the 18th Annual Montgomery County Law Enforcement Officer Memorial Ceremony to honor 49 officers who died in the line of duty over the past 145 years. Sgt. Kyle Thomas and the family of Butler Township Patrolman Jahn E. Schmidt shared their memories (Schmidt was killed in 1976), reminding the community of the sacrifice made by its police.
