  • Sister Mary Wendeln, an 85-year-old nun with 67 years of service, fought for the rights of the less fortunate in places from the southern border to Palestine.   • The Humane Society of Greater Dayton is pausing new dog cruelty and neglect cases from the county dog warden because Avery’s Law shifted responsibilities and left them with only two part-time agents. They will direct these cases to law enforcement until a sustainable system is set up.  WHIO-TV
  • Bishop Richard E. Cox, a community activist and civil rights leader, passed away at 77 on Saturday, May 2. City leaders, including Mayor Shenise Turner-Sloss and Dr. Derrick Foward, remembered him as a warrior (a dedicated mentor) who championed a new hospital for West Dayton.  WHIO-TV

  • Franklin City Schools said an investigation started Friday after a staff member reportedly brought a weapon onto campus and moved it off to their car (no students were involved) before police took the employee into custody.  Dayton 24/7 Now

  • Gas prices driven by global crude oil now account for about half the pump price, with local stations in Huber Heights and Trenton reporting $3.79 to over $4 per gallon; policy shifts like tax holidays & Jones Act waivers offer slight relief while drivers still face higher costs.  Dayton Daily News

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Eastway Behavioral Healthcare will upgrade the commercial kitchen at Webster Street Academy with grants of $7,500 from the Dayton Foundation, $10,000 from its Physicians’ Charitable Trust, and $3,000 from the Dayton Rotary Foundation. The new facility will help kids receive healthy meals during day treatment (improving food security).  Dayton Daily News

  • Submarine House at 930 E. Dorothy Lane in Kettering is appealing a city code violation for its mirrored window tint as officials say storefront windows must remain clear — the public hearing has been rescheduled with no new date posted.
