  • Matthew and Katelyn Pope noticed a suspicious man on their family walk on March 12 in Miamisburg—prompting police to arrest Dametrius Turner, who is accused of murdering a woman. The city honored the couple as hometown heroes for trusting their instincts.  Dayton 24/7 Now
  • A 93-year-old Korean War veteran—Leroy Campbell—was honored with a Purple Heart coin at the Dayton VA for his service with the 82nd Airborne Division after he was injured in battle. Campbell expressed his gratitude for finally receiving recognition for his bravery decades later.  Dayton 24/7 Now

  • New restaurants owned by Dolly’s Burgers and Shakes will soon open in former Frisch’s spots in Huber Heights — 8154 Old Troy Pike, Englewood — 1095 S. Main Street, Fairborn — 3110 Colonel Glenn Highway, Kettering — 2861 Wilmington Pike, Bellbrook — 6188 Wilmington Pike and Xenia — 386 W. Main St. The companies are recruiting managers and shift leaders while it remains unclear if former Frisch’s employees will be rehired.  WHIO-TV

CRIME NEWS

  • A judge approved the transfer of two 17-year-olds to adult court in connection with the fatal shooting of Aaron Washington during an attempted break-in in Dayton last year—now their cases will go before a grand jury soon.  Dayton Daily News

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Local veterans have two upcoming job fairs that offer employment opportunities and veteran-focused support services. The Vets Moving Forward Resource and Job Fair is scheduled for May 21 from 3-7 p.m. at the Wright State Student Union Apollo Room and Hiring Our Heroes will feature about 50 employers with added benefit workshops.  Dayton Daily News

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Dayton Public Schools is planning to move middle school students out of Belmont High School (this change will free space for a Freshman Academy and new career pathways) and will stop accepting new seventh graders next school year before ending enrollment for seventh and eighth grades in 2026-2027. The plan may require about 124 sixth grade students to go to Wright Brothers Middle School (the proposal is under review by the school board amid mixed feedback from teachers and community members).  Dayton Daily News

  • Commissioner Darryl Fairchild is seeking re-election after serving two terms on the City Commission. He said his past work focused on protecting water infrastructure and planning for neighborhoods and housing, and he will bring urgency to improve services — including investing in youth and protecting citizens — before the May 6 election.  Dayton 24/7 Now

HEALTH NEWS

  • Wright State professor Karen Wonders was named the 2025 Remarkable Woman of Dayton for her groundbreaking work in exercise oncology. She founded Maple Tree Cancer Alliance in 2011 to help cancer patients through exercise programs and her initiative now serves more than 20,000 patients across 86 locations in the nation and 25 countries worldwide.  Wright State University

  • The former Elder-Beerman store at Dayton Mall sold for $2.5M to Miamisburg Springboro Mall Anchor LLC. The new company—formed on January 30—bought the building that has been vacant since Elder-Beerman closed in August 2018, according to Montgomery County records.  Dayton Daily News
