  • 8-year-old Harper Paxton donated $1,265 to the Gasper Township Fire and EMS unit after raising funds at the Polar Bear Plunge at Lake Lakengren on March 15—her two-year effort has collected over $1,700 while earning praise from Fire and EMS Chief Andrew George.  WDTN

  • Yesterday, officers closed S. Main Street between Plumwood and Stonemill Roads in Dayton after a utility pole fell and wires came down — officials say crews will secure the area before reopening the street.  WHIO-TV

CRIME NEWS

  • Dayton Police arrested a 23-year-old man on Friday on suspicion of killing Alfred Hale, an 18-year-old Dunbar high school senior, at 27 S. Jefferson St.—detectives said they would present charges to the Montgomery County Prosecutor's Office.  Dayton Daily News

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Gary Recker at Dayton Christian High School created a multi-year industrial arts program that teaches students hand skills, reading prints, and building furniture. ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Monday’s heavy rain caused flooding in low-lying areas that led Five Rivers MetroParks to close parts of several parks and blocked roads in the Miami Valley—township crews and emergency responders are working to manage the situation and advise residents to avoid dangerous flood waters.  WYSO

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Early voting for Ohio’s May 6 primary election begins tomorrow as voters decide on local races and a statewide ballot measure to issue $2.5 billion in bonds; registration ends today (in-person voters must bring a valid photo ID).  Dayton Daily News
  • Greene County completed its $40 million water treatment upgrade so customers now receive water with 8 grains per gallon after fixing issues from last fall. County engineers advise residents to use a bypass on their home water softeners for a few weeks before recalibrating them to the new level.  Dayton Daily News
  • Air Force meteorologists are being trained at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base’s AFIT after the program moved from the Naval Postgraduate School in August and began with nine officers to help make weather decisions that save lives. The course will add more students for fall and gives top performers a chance to extend their studies—earning an advanced record—while teaching them to advise on actions that protect people.  Dayton Daily News
