ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • On Tuesday just before 3:15 a.m. near Xenia Avenue and Boltin Street, Dayton police said a drag racing crash caused a Jeep to go off the road and through two homes, injuring multiple people including a 65-year-old woman—her arm impaled—and a 23-year-old Jeep driver in critical condition while a 17-year-old Hyundai driver was treated and released as investigators probe evidence of intoxication and unlicensed driving.  Dayton Daily News

BUSINESS NEWS

  • The historic downtown business Requarth Lumber on East Monument Ave was acquired by the Schockman Lumber Group and the Bruns family, ensuring the store will remain open under local management—Pippenger, who retired as president in January 2024, remains involved as chairman of the board with family shareholders keeping a financial interest in the company. The sale, with undisclosed terms, supports continuity for a business founded in 1860 that once supplied wood to the Wright brothers.  Dayton Daily News

CRIME NEWS

  • Walter Elofskey was sentenced to 19 to 24.5 years in prison for hitting two people and killing 71-year-old Marie Hansen during a crash on Sept 10 near Sweet Potato Ridge Road while trying to evade police; his driver's license was suspended for life (with a $7,000 restitution requirement) and he also faces theft charges (trial expected in May).  WHIO-TV

  • Local Spanish teacher Veronica Kiefaber of Franklin High in Kettering is nearing the finals of a national online contest to be named America's favorite teacher and has launched free online Spanish lessons to boost votes (if she wins, she will use a $25,000 prize to fund a scholarship for her students).  WDTN

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Drivers in Greene County face delays today as police escort a 369,000-pound transformer from the Fairborn Railroad site on E. Xenia Drive to the AES substation site on Dayton Xenia Road—officials say the 145-foot load will take 6-8 hours to complete its trip with road closures beginning at 9 a.m.  WHIO-TV
  • The city of Dayton approved spending about $990,000 to upgrade lighting along Main Street+ and North Main Street will be closed for several weeks for work on the Pvt. George Washington Fair monument. City officials also approved about $1.5 million for beautification projects+ to prepare for the NATO Parliamentary Assembly session in late May.  Dayton Daily News

  • Wright State University students danced for 12 hours on March 29 to raise over $55,000 for the Mathile Center for Mental Health and Wellness at Dayton Children’s Hospital—more than 200 participants took part in the Raiderthon dance marathon held in the Student Union Apollo Room.  Wright State University
