- ➤ The U.S. Department of Education announced more than 1,300 layoffs this week and local officials say the cuts may slow federal funding for special education and services for homeless students. Dayton Public Schools received about $43 million in federal funds this year (a key part of its support) while officials work to understand the impact. Dayton Daily News
