COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Dayton recorded more than 570 fires in 2024 that damaged 320 structures — about a third of these were in vacant or abandoned buildings that pose safety risks. In the first two months of 2025, two fatal fires in occupied structures were reported — nearly matching the total fatalities from 2024 — prompting city officials to urge residents to report unsafe conditions.  Dayton Daily News

  • New Frisch’s owners filed a lawsuit after a judge banned the Michigan Big Boy Restaurant Group from using the Big Boy name in several former Frisch’s locations plus new restaurants are now opening under the Dolly’s Burgers & Shakes name.   • Miamisburg City Schools locked all vestibules and cancelled outdoor recess as police continued to search for 32-year-old Demetrius Turner — a man linked to the fatal shooting of a woman.  WHIO-TV
  • A 20-year-old man is accused of shooting a 15-year-old near a Dayton park Tuesday afternoon; he was arrested Tuesday night and now faces two counts of felonious assault & one count of firearm discharge after officers responded to reports of multiple gunshots.  Dayton Daily News

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Wright State University invites faculty, staff and retirees to support over 2,000 scholarships and programs during its Campus Scholarship and Innovation Campaign from March 17 to April 25. The Flight Crew, which includes donors giving a minimum of $5, will launch at an event with President Sue Edwards on March 18 (breakfast is served from 8:30 to 10 a.m.).  Wright State University
  • Aurora Spisak, an eighth grader at Watts Elementary in Fairborn, won the Wright State Regional Spelling Bee for the second time after spelling over 30 rounds of words correctly+ she will head to the National Spelling Bee in Washington D.C. in May with improved study techniques.  WHIO-TV

  • USDA cuts are ending the Local Food Purchase Assistance program, which is already affecting food pantries in the Miami Valley and farmers like Guided by Mushrooms plus low-income families. The decision forces local producers to face tougher challenges as they try to continue supporting community needs.  WHIO-TV
  • The City of Dayton is hosting a virtual event on its Procurement Enhancement Plan that shows small business owners how to become certified as a woman-owned, minority-owned or disadvantaged enterprise — attendees can ask questions live and receive a full presentation with active links as a thank-you for RSVPing.  Dayton937.com
  • Soldiers from a Columbus-based U.S. Army Reserve unit will parachute from a KC-130J aircraft at Wright-Patterson Airfield on Friday for a training exercise. Roughly 100 soldiers are set for the afternoon jump and about 80 for the evening—if weather is poor, the jumps may be postponed or canceled.  WDTN
