  • More than 500 carbon monoxide detectors will be donated to local fire departments in Dayton and nearby areas over the next few weeks by The Firefighters & Company Federal Credit Union through its holiday skip a payment program, marking the 11th consecutive year of donations with nearly $85,000 in equipment.  Dayton 24/7 Now

  • Firefighters rescued an adult, a teen, three cats and a chihuahua from a flooded home on Ross-Hanover Road at Walnut Road in Millville early Thursday morning after swift water from a nearby creek overwhelmed the basement.  Dayton 24/7 Now
  • On Wednesday night, about 500 people gathered at Fellowship of Praise Church in Clarksville to mourn Brooke and her five children, who died in a house fire, and show support for father Tommy (recovering at Miami Valley Hospital).  Dayton 24/7 Now

  • Arkansas-based 7 Brew Coffee opened its drive-thru location in Miamisburg at 310 N. Springboro Pike, adding 50 jobs and featuring a new 510 sqft stand that donated $10,000 to Dayton Children’s Hospital (underscoring its commitment to local growth).  Dayton Daily News

EDUCATION NEWS

  • University of Dayton is tightening safety rules for its upcoming St. Patrick's Day gathering on campus by banning guests, backpacks, and glass containers. Only students with wristbands can enter designated areas and parking will have restrictions (details coming soon).  Flyer News
  • Three Wright State University students won a full year of tuition (worth about $13,000) during a Raiders’ Horizon League tournament game on Wednesday at Nutter Center when President Sue Edwards helped them with extra attempts after their initial misses, and the team celebrated a 90-62 win over Cleveland State.  Dayton 24/7 Now
  • The Ohio House passed a bill on Wednesday that will help foster students access needed support by creating education liaisons and family navigators in every school. The bipartisan measure now heads to the Senate for further review.  Dayton Daily News

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Ohio will soon ban SNAP benefits from being used to buy soda and other sugary drinks. The new rule — approved by the USDA and set to take effect Oct. 1 — is part of the state’s effort to support better health outcomes.  Dayton 24/7 Now
  • Riverside will begin upgrading Harshman Road at the Beatrice Drive and Valley Pike intersections on June 1. The improvements include a new traffic signal, equipment upgrades and a sidewalk, with a project cost of about $641,000 and the city paying $78,000, and will finish by summer 2027.  Dayton Daily News
  • Structural concerns forced the city to close the sidewalk on W First Street, leaving two ground-floor businesses without access (city officials say the building poses safety risks).  WHIO-TV
  • Ohio Attorney General Dave Yost said he cannot confirm or deny an ongoing probe into Kettering Health and expects to share more details later this year (he contrasted it with the previously announced Columbus Zoo inquiry that led to indictments).  Dayton Daily News
