COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Montgomery County residents are applying for utility assistance from the Miami Valley Community Action Partnership using calls and online submissions, as electricity help requests have risen to 58% following over a foot of snow and sub-zero wind chills today.  WHIO-TV
  • Miami Valley Housing Opportunities is raising funds for Beacon Place Village, a tiny home community with 40 500 sqft units and a community center on a 12-acre site along Needmore Road. The project has secured $4M (including $1.25M from the city) and will be completed by 2027.  WYSO
  • Two Dayton homeless shelters are busy as below-freezing temperatures continue, with the men’s shelter at 1921 S. Gettysburg Ave. — not turning anyone away — and a women and family shelter offering extra beds and mats to protect residents from the ongoing Arctic cold.  Dayton Daily News

  • A new NY-style pizza shop opens today on E. 1st Street near Day Air Ballpark — a ribbon cutting is set for 3:45 p.m. and service will start at 4 p.m., with the first 100 customers receiving a free slice and t-shirt.  WHIO-TV
  • Certified Cultivators LLC plans to open its second Dayton-area dispensary near Dayton Mall in Miami Twp in the former Frisch’s building, a dual-use retail space for medical and recreational marijuana that will operate daily from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. and create about 30 jobs after final approval.  Dayton Daily News

  • Today, the historic Dayton Arcade becomes a vibrant hub for art, wellness and local shopping as Arcade Commons hosts pop-up vendors and interactive installations. Local businesses and community members will explore creative offerings during the event.  Dayton 24/7 Now
  • The National VOA Museum of Broadcasting in West Chester is preparing new interactive exhibits (with family-friendly touches) ahead of America's 250 celebration and will open Friday through Sunday in February.  Spectrum News 1

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Dayton Public Schools board will vote Tuesday at noon on two levy options to raise over $10 million for operations and building improvements on the May ballot — paperwork is due by 4 p.m. Wednesday as five members support the resolution and one opposes it.  Dayton Daily News

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Ohio House lawmakers introduced a bipartisan bill limiting private school vouchers to families earning $500,000 or less (House Bill 643). Lawmakers say the measure could save about $250,000 a year while some education groups warn it may reduce access for students.  Dayton Daily News
  • Kettering will boost bike paths with two projects: one adds a shortcut between Business Park and Patterson Park and the other links Research Boulevard to the Sixth River development. Funded by ODOT, the projects finish by October and take 3 to 4 weeks and 6 to 8 weeks.  Dayton Daily News

  • The University of Dayton men’s basketball team lost to No. 21 Saint Louis, 102-71, Friday night at Chaifetz Arena, extending its losing streak to four games—the first such run since the 2013-14 season. They will host St. Bonaventure on Tuesday, Feb. 3 at 7 p.m. at UD Arena.  WHIO-TV
