  • In Fairborn, Marta Malavich said her daughter is stuck in Puerto Rico after JetBlue canceled flights on Friday due to military activity in the Caribbean (causing hundreds of travelers to be stranded). Malavich said she is scared to death as she awaits news on her daughter's travel options.  WHIO-TV

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • A local restaurant closed temporarily after a kitchen fire on Saturday, Jan. 3 when staff worked quickly to control the blaze. Officials said they are assessing the damage before planning a safe reopening.  WHIO-TV
  • A kitchen fire at Slyder’s Tavern on Saturday closed the Belmont restaurant for cleanup — it is set to reopen Monday after equipment checks.  Dayton Daily News

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Southwest Ohio school superintendents earn above-average salaries with perks covering retirement contributions sparking debate among critics who call for greater taxpayer transparency while advocates say the benefits help recruit talent. The highest recorded salary is $240,957 at Miami Valley Career Tech Center.  Dayton Daily News
  • The Northridge Local Schools pep band held a tribute for former band director Jacob Lorkovic (a teacher since the school year began) after his unexpected passing. The event celebrated his dedication to the school music program and united the community.  WHIO-TV

  • Wright-Patterson Air Force Base leaders sealed a time capsule with 40 items including the final print copy of the base newspaper and a baby onesie that marks the closure of the base hospital’s labor unit; the capsule will be opened in 2050.  WYSO
  • Miamisburg and Miami Twp. saw changes in 2025: Hull Property Group bought Dayton Mall ahead of the Miami Crossing District Plan, Sycamore Trails Park received a $10.3M upgrade, city management and police roles were filled, and Miami Twp. will hold a trial on a fiscal officer case Jan. 14.  Dayton Daily News
