  • The Dayton area Girls on the Run nonprofit had a banner year in 2025, serving over 10,000 girls across Montgomery, Miami, Clark, Greene and Preble counties.   • Ronald McDonald House Charities Dayton is asking for donations for its Wish List Program to support families of sick children. The charity seeks supplies (hot meals, toiletries, cleaning items) needed as families face longer stays and colder days.  Dayton 24/7 Now

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • A fire on Friday forced 17 people out of their homes at 420 Westwood Avenue in West Dayton, and the Miami Valley Ohio Chapter of the Red Cross provided shelter at Mount Enon Baptist Church for one night.  Dayton 24/7 Now

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Toasted Brunch Bar + Cafe will open its second Beavercreek location near The Greene on mid-January at 4448 Indian Ripple Road, offering globally inspired brunch fare with fresh pastries and a full espresso bar. CULTURE NEWS

  • Engineer Szymanski will share 40 years of his Wright-Patterson experiences, including encounters with aliens and paranormal events (highlighting his Ghost Hunters appearance) during a free talk at Winters-Bellbrook Community Library, 57 West Franklin St., on Jan. 17 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Copies of his books will be available for purchase and signing.  Dayton Daily News
  • Hawthorn Hill, the home of Orville Wright in Oakwood, has been designated as an Ohio landmark to honor its aviation legacy (its library remains unchanged since his death). This official recognition is expected to boost local historical interest.  WHIO-TV

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Northridge Local Schools announced that band director Jacob Lorkovic died, prompting counseling services from 12:30 to 2 p.m. today at Door 1 and a public vigil at 5 p.m. today in the high school cafeteria—additional support will be offered on Monday, Jan. 5.  Dayton Daily News
  • Northridge Local Schools announced the unexpected passing of beloved teacher and band director Jacob Lorkovic whose passion for music and students is remembered — a vigil is held today at 5 p.m. in the high school cafeteria, with counseling available Friday from 12:30 to 2 p.m. and on Monday after winter break.  Dayton 24/7 Now

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Greene County and ODOT are inviting public input on safety upgrades at the busy intersection of Indian Ripple Road and Factory Road near the future high school. The project (estimated at $5.5 million) includes left-turn lanes and a traffic signal, accepts feedback until Jan. 17, and plans construction for 2027.  Dayton Daily News
  • A portion of Endicott Road from Powell Road to Fishburg Road in Huber Heights is closed starting Jan. 5 for sewer pipe installation. The street is expected to reopen by early March — residents have driveway access and traffic is detoured via Rip Rap Road.  WYSO

HEALTH NEWS

  • The Ohio Department of Health reported that flu hospitalizations nearly doubled in the week ending Dec. 27, with Montgomery County recording 194 cases and other counties also up. Local hospitals have enforced visitor restrictions — no visitors with respiratory symptoms or under age 14 are allowed.  Dayton Daily News
  • Montgomery County saw a 12% drop in overdose deaths in 2025, with 149 fatalities reported by the Community Overdose Action Team + partners. Project manager Dawn Schwartz cautions that continued funding is essential to keep saving lives.  Dayton 24/7 Now
