  • The Humane Society of Greater Dayton broke its pet adoption record with over 2,900 animals finding new homes as of December 30. The shelter credits dedicated staff (and volunteers) for helping it surpass the 2024 total of 2,491 adoptions.  WYSO
  • The Humane Society of Greater Dayton broke its record with 2,910 pet adoptions in 2025, a 16.8% increase from 2024. It fostered over 1,500 animals using 205,000 program hours and completed more than 9,000 spay-neuter procedures to help control pet overpopulation.  Dayton 24/7 Now

  • Today, the Ohio Department of Commerce announced that the minimum wage for non-tipped workers rises to $11—marking a 2.8 percent increase—and that new thresholds will apply to businesses with over $405,000 in annual receipts; the rate for 14- and 15-year-old workers remains at $7.25.  Dayton 24/7 Now

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • People discarding live-cut Christmas trees should remove all decorations and drop them off at the North Pool Boat Ramp at Caesar Creek State Park in Waynesville until Friday, Jan. 16.   • Vandalia Fire launches a new squad program today at 7 a.m. to handle non-life-threatening 911 calls like lift assists and chirping detectors, so full units continue to address fires and car crashes.  WHIO-TV
  • On Dec. 31, 2025, the city commission voted against a zoning request for Flying Ace Express Car Wash to convert a vacant Rite Aid property on Wilmington Ave and Patterson Rd in Belmont, with neighbors saying the project would add too much traffic to a quiet street.  Dayton Daily News
  • On New Year's Eve, Montgomery County launched the ArriveSafe program to curb DUIs by providing free Uber vouchers from local events (starting at 6 p.m.).   • On Wednesday, Greene County health officials confirmed a pediatric flu death in a previously healthy teen aged between 15 and 17, marking the season's first case. They urged caregivers to watch for severe symptoms like trouble breathing (a sign to seek prompt care).  WHIO-TV
